Simplify the operation
Reduce (simplify) the fractions to their lowest terms equivalents:
- To reduce a fraction to the lowest terms equivalent: divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor, GCF.
The fraction: - 1,930/5
- The prime factorizations of the numerator and denominator:
- 1,930 = 2 × 5 × 193
- 5 is a prime number.
- Multiply all the common prime factors: if there are repeating prime factors we only take them once, and only the ones having the lowest exponent (the lowest powers).
- GCF (1,930; 5) = 5
- 1,930/5 = - (1,930 ÷ 5)/(5 ÷ 5) = - 386/1 = - 386
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
- 1,930/5 = - (2 × 5 × 193)/5 = - ((2 × 5 × 193) ÷ 5)/(5 ÷ 5) = - 386/1 = - 386
The fraction: - 1,940/12
- 1,940 = 22 × 5 × 97
- 12 = 22 × 3
- GCF (1,940; 12) = 22 = 4

The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
