Simplify the operation
Reduce (simplify) the fractions to their lowest terms equivalents:
- To reduce a fraction to the lowest terms equivalent: divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor, GCF.
The fraction: - 302/151
- The prime factorizations of the numerator and denominator:
- 302 = 2 × 151
- 151 is a prime number.
- Multiply all the common prime factors: if there are repeating prime factors we only take them once, and only the ones having the lowest exponent (the lowest powers).
- GCF (302; 151) = 151
- 302/151 = - (302 ÷ 151)/(151 ÷ 151) = - 2/1 = - 2
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
- 302/151 = - (2 × 151)/151 = - ((2 × 151) ÷ 151)/(151 ÷ 151) = - 2/1 = - 2
The fraction: - 308/161
- 308 = 22 × 7 × 11
- 161 = 7 × 23
- GCF (308; 161) = 7
- 308/161 = - (308 ÷ 7)/(161 ÷ 7) = - 44/23
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
- 308/161 = - (22 × 7 × 11)/(7 × 23) = - ((22 × 7 × 11) ÷ 7)/((7 × 23) ÷ 7) = - 44/23
