Simplify the operation
Reduce (simplify) the fractions to their lowest terms equivalents:
- To reduce a fraction to the lowest terms equivalent: divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor, GCF.
The fraction: - 330/3
- The prime factorizations of the numerator and denominator:
- 330 = 2 × 3 × 5 × 11
- 3 is a prime number.
- Multiply all the common prime factors: if there are repeating prime factors we only take them once, and only the ones having the lowest exponent (the lowest powers).
- GCF (330; 3) = 3
- 330/3 = - (330 ÷ 3)/(3 ÷ 3) = - 110/1 = - 110
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
- 330/3 = - (2 × 3 × 5 × 11)/3 = - ((2 × 3 × 5 × 11) ÷ 3)/(3 ÷ 3) = - 110/1 = - 110
The fraction: - 333/6
- 333 = 32 × 37
- 6 = 2 × 3
- GCF (333; 6) = 3
- 333/6 = - (333 ÷ 3)/(6 ÷ 3) = - 111/2
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
- 333/6 = - (32 × 37)/(2 × 3) = - ((32 × 37) ÷ 3)/((2 × 3) ÷ 3) = - 111/2
