Simplify the operation
Reduce (simplify) the fractions to their lowest terms equivalents:
- To reduce a fraction to the lowest terms equivalent: divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor, GCF.
The fraction: - 678/90
- The prime factorizations of the numerator and denominator:
- 678 = 2 × 3 × 113
- 90 = 2 × 32 × 5
- Multiply all the common prime factors: if there are repeating prime factors we only take them once, and only the ones having the lowest exponent (the lowest powers).
- GCF (678; 90) = 2 × 3 = 6
- 678/90 = - (678 ÷ 6)/(90 ÷ 6) = - 113/15
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
- 678/90 = - (2 × 3 × 113)/(2 × 32 × 5) = - ((2 × 3 × 113) ÷ (2 × 3))/((2 × 32 × 5) ÷ (2 × 3)) = - 113/15
The fraction: - 686/98
- 686 = 2 × 73
- 98 = 2 × 72
- GCF (686; 98) = 2 × 72 = 98
- 686/98 = - (686 ÷ 98)/(98 ÷ 98) = - 7/1 = - 7
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
- 686/98 = - (2 × 73)/(2 × 72) = - ((2 × 73) ÷ (2 × 72))/((2 × 72) ÷ (2 × 72)) = - 7/1 = - 7
