Simplify the operation
Reduce (simplify) the fractions to their lowest terms equivalents:
- To reduce a fraction to the lowest terms equivalent: divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor, GCF.
The fraction: - 68/136
- The prime factorizations of the numerator and denominator:
- 68 = 22 × 17
- 136 = 23 × 17
- Multiply all the common prime factors: if there are repeating prime factors we only take them once, and only the ones having the lowest exponent (the lowest powers).
- GCF (68; 136) = 22 × 17 = 68
- 68/136 = - (68 ÷ 68)/(136 ÷ 68) = - 1/2
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
- 68/136 = - (22 × 17)/(23 × 17) = - ((22 × 17) ÷ (22 × 17))/((23 × 17) ÷ (22 × 17)) = - 1/2
The fraction: - 72/140
- 72 = 23 × 32
- 140 = 22 × 5 × 7
- GCF (72; 140) = 22 = 4
- 72/140 = - (72 ÷ 4)/(140 ÷ 4) = - 18/35
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
- 72/140 = - (23 × 32)/(22 × 5 × 7) = - ((23 × 32) ÷ 22)/((22 × 5 × 7) ÷ 22) = - 18/35
