Simplify the operation
Reduce (simplify) the fractions to their lowest terms equivalents:
- To reduce a fraction to the lowest terms equivalent: divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor, GCF.
The fraction: - 779/41
- The prime factorizations of the numerator and denominator:
- 779 = 19 × 41
- 41 is a prime number.
- Multiply all the common prime factors: if there are repeating prime factors we only take them once, and only the ones having the lowest exponent (the lowest powers).
- GCF (779; 41) = 41
- 779/41 = - (779 ÷ 41)/(41 ÷ 41) = - 19/1 = - 19
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
- 779/41 = - (19 × 41)/41 = - ((19 × 41) ÷ 41)/(41 ÷ 41) = - 19/1 = - 19
The fraction: - 783/45
- 783 = 33 × 29
- 45 = 32 × 5
- GCF (783; 45) = 32 = 9
- 783/45 = - (783 ÷ 9)/(45 ÷ 9) = - 87/5
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
- 783/45 = - (33 × 29)/(32 × 5) = - ((33 × 29) ÷ 32)/((32 × 5) ÷ 32) = - 87/5
