Simplify the operation
Reduce (simplify) the fractions to their lowest terms equivalents:
- To reduce a fraction to the lowest terms equivalent: divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor, GCF.
The fraction: - 9,206/8
- The prime factorizations of the numerator and denominator:
- 9,206 = 2 × 4,603
- 8 = 23
- Multiply all the common prime factors: if there are repeating prime factors we only take them once, and only the ones having the lowest exponent (the lowest powers).
- GCF (9,206; 8) = 2
- 9,206/8 = - (9,206 ÷ 2)/(8 ÷ 2) = - 4,603/4
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
- 9,206/8 = - (2 × 4,603)/23 = - ((2 × 4,603) ÷ 2)/(23 ÷ 2) = - 4,603/4
To compare and sort the fractions, make their denominators the same.
Expand the fraction that has 1 as a denominator.
Multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number:
- 9,200 = - (4 × 9,200)/(4 × 1) = - 36,800/4
