Simplify the operation
Reduce (simplify) the fractions to their lowest terms equivalents:
- To reduce a fraction to the lowest terms equivalent: divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor, GCF.
The fraction: 106/178
- The prime factorizations of the numerator and denominator:
- 106 = 2 × 53
- 178 = 2 × 89
- Multiply all the common prime factors: if there are repeating prime factors we only take them once, and only the ones having the lowest exponent (the lowest powers).
- GCF (106; 178) = 2
106/178 = (106 ÷ 2)/(178 ÷ 2) = 53/89
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
106/178 = (2 × 53)/(2 × 89) = ((2 × 53) ÷ 2)/((2 × 89) ÷ 2) = 53/89
The fraction: 103/187
103/187 is already reduced to the lowest terms.
The numerator and denominator have no common prime factors:
- 103 is a prime number.
- 187 = 11 × 17
- GCF (103; 187) = 1
The fraction: 109/185
109/185 is already reduced to the lowest terms.
The numerator and denominator have no common prime factors:
- 109 is a prime number.
- 185 = 5 × 37
- GCF (109; 185) = 1
The fraction: 101/210
101/210 is already reduced to the lowest terms.
The numerator and denominator have no common prime factors:
- 101 is a prime number.
- 210 = 2 × 3 × 5 × 7
- GCF (101; 210) = 1
The fraction: 119/268
119/268 is already reduced to the lowest terms.
The numerator and denominator have no common prime factors:
- 119 = 7 × 17
- 268 = 22 × 67
- GCF (119; 268) = 1
Calculate the common numerator
The common numerator is nothing else than the least common multiple (LCM) of the numerators of the fractions.
To calculate the LCM, we need the prime factorization of the numerators:
53 is a prime number.
103 is a prime number.
109 is a prime number.
101 is a prime number.
119 = 7 × 17
Multiply all the unique prime factors: if there are repeating prime factors we only take them once, and only the ones having the highest exponent (the highest powers).
LCM (53, 103, 109, 101, 119) = 7 × 17 × 53 × 101 × 103 × 109 = 7,151,677,589
Calculate the expanding number of each fraction:
Divide the LCM by the numerator of each fraction.
53/89 ⟶ 7,151,677,589 ÷ 53 = (7 × 17 × 53 × 101 × 103 × 109) ÷ 53 = 134,937,313
103/187 ⟶ 7,151,677,589 ÷ 103 = (7 × 17 × 53 × 101 × 103 × 109) ÷ 103 = 69,433,763
109/185 ⟶ 7,151,677,589 ÷ 109 = (7 × 17 × 53 × 101 × 103 × 109) ÷ 109 = 65,611,721
101/210 ⟶ 7,151,677,589 ÷ 101 = (7 × 17 × 53 × 101 × 103 × 109) ÷ 101 = 70,808,689
119/268 ⟶ 7,151,677,589 ÷ 119 = (7 × 17 × 53 × 101 × 103 × 109) ÷ (7 × 17) = 60,098,131
Make the numerators of the fractions the same:
- Expand each fraction: multiply both its numerator and denominator by its corresponding expanding number, calculated above.
- This way all the fractions will have the same numerator:
53/89 = (134,937,313 × 53)/(134,937,313 × 89) = 7,151,677,589/12,009,420,857
103/187 = (69,433,763 × 103)/(69,433,763 × 187) = 7,151,677,589/12,984,113,681
109/185 = (65,611,721 × 109)/(65,611,721 × 185) = 7,151,677,589/12,138,168,385
101/210 = (70,808,689 × 101)/(70,808,689 × 210) = 7,151,677,589/14,869,824,690
119/268 = (60,098,131 × 119)/(60,098,131 × 268) = 7,151,677,589/16,106,299,108
