Simplify the operation
Reduce (simplify) the fractions to their lowest terms equivalents:
- To reduce a fraction to the lowest terms equivalent: divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor, GCF.
The fraction: 170/78
- The prime factorizations of the numerator and denominator:
- 170 = 2 × 5 × 17
- 78 = 2 × 3 × 13
- Multiply all the common prime factors: if there are repeating prime factors we only take them once, and only the ones having the lowest exponent (the lowest powers).
- GCF (170; 78) = 2
170/78 = (170 ÷ 2)/(78 ÷ 2) = 85/39
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
170/78 = (2 × 5 × 17)/(2 × 3 × 13) = ((2 × 5 × 17) ÷ 2)/((2 × 3 × 13) ÷ 2) = 85/39
The fraction: 172/86
- 172 = 22 × 43
- 86 = 2 × 43
- GCF (172; 86) = 2 × 43 = 86
172/86 = (172 ÷ 86)/(86 ÷ 86) = 2/1 = 2
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
172/86 = (22 × 43)/(2 × 43) = ((22 × 43) ÷ (2 × 43))/((2 × 43) ÷ (2 × 43)) = 2/1 = 2
