Simplify the operation
Reduce (simplify) the fractions to their lowest terms equivalents:
- To reduce a fraction to the lowest terms equivalent: divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor, GCF.
The fraction: 600/75
- The prime factorizations of the numerator and denominator:
- 600 = 23 × 3 × 52
- 75 = 3 × 52
- Multiply all the common prime factors: if there are repeating prime factors we only take them once, and only the ones having the lowest exponent (the lowest powers).
- GCF (600; 75) = 3 × 52 = 75
600/75 = (600 ÷ 75)/(75 ÷ 75) = 8/1 = 8
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
600/75 = (23 × 3 × 52)/(3 × 52) = ((23 × 3 × 52) ÷ (3 × 52))/((3 × 52) ÷ (3 × 52)) = 8/1 = 8
The fraction: 610/78
- 610 = 2 × 5 × 61
- 78 = 2 × 3 × 13
- GCF (610; 78) = 2
610/78 = (610 ÷ 2)/(78 ÷ 2) = 305/39
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
610/78 = (2 × 5 × 61)/(2 × 3 × 13) = ((2 × 5 × 61) ÷ 2)/((2 × 3 × 13) ÷ 2) = 305/39
