Simplify the operation
Reduce (simplify) the fractions to their lowest terms equivalents:
- To reduce a fraction to the lowest terms equivalent: divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor, GCF.
The fraction: 612/102
- The prime factorizations of the numerator and denominator:
- 612 = 22 × 32 × 17
- 102 = 2 × 3 × 17
- Multiply all the common prime factors: if there are repeating prime factors we only take them once, and only the ones having the lowest exponent (the lowest powers).
- GCF (612; 102) = 2 × 3 × 17 = 102
612/102 = (612 ÷ 102)/(102 ÷ 102) = 6/1 = 6
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
612/102 = (22 × 32 × 17)/(2 × 3 × 17) = ((22 × 32 × 17) ÷ (2 × 3 × 17))/((2 × 3 × 17) ÷ (2 × 3 × 17)) = 6/1 = 6
The fraction: 620/112
- 620 = 22 × 5 × 31
- 112 = 24 × 7
- GCF (620; 112) = 22 = 4
620/112 = (620 ÷ 4)/(112 ÷ 4) = 155/28
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
620/112 = (22 × 5 × 31)/(24 × 7) = ((22 × 5 × 31) ÷ 22)/((24 × 7) ÷ 22) = 155/28
