Simplify the operation
Reduce (simplify) the fractions to their lowest terms equivalents:
- To reduce a fraction to the lowest terms equivalent: divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor, GCF.
The fraction: 658/94
- The prime factorizations of the numerator and denominator:
- 658 = 2 × 7 × 47
- 94 = 2 × 47
- Multiply all the common prime factors: if there are repeating prime factors we only take them once, and only the ones having the lowest exponent (the lowest powers).
- GCF (658; 94) = 2 × 47 = 94
658/94 = (658 ÷ 94)/(94 ÷ 94) = 7/1 = 7
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
658/94 = (2 × 7 × 47)/(2 × 47) = ((2 × 7 × 47) ÷ (2 × 47))/((2 × 47) ÷ (2 × 47)) = 7/1 = 7
The fraction: 666/100
- 666 = 2 × 32 × 37
- 100 = 22 × 52
- GCF (666; 100) = 2
666/100 = (666 ÷ 2)/(100 ÷ 2) = 333/50
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
666/100 = (2 × 32 × 37)/(22 × 52) = ((2 × 32 × 37) ÷ 2)/((22 × 52) ÷ 2) = 333/50
