Simplify the operation
Reduce (simplify) the fractions to their lowest terms equivalents:
- To reduce a fraction to the lowest terms equivalent: divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor, GCF.
The fraction: 792/22
- The prime factorizations of the numerator and denominator:
- 792 = 23 × 32 × 11
- 22 = 2 × 11
- Multiply all the common prime factors: if there are repeating prime factors we only take them once, and only the ones having the lowest exponent (the lowest powers).
- GCF (792; 22) = 2 × 11 = 22
792/22 = (792 ÷ 22)/(22 ÷ 22) = 36/1 = 36
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
792/22 = (23 × 32 × 11)/(2 × 11) = ((23 × 32 × 11) ÷ (2 × 11))/((2 × 11) ÷ (2 × 11)) = 36/1 = 36
The fraction: 802/30
- 802 = 2 × 401
- 30 = 2 × 3 × 5
- GCF (802; 30) = 2
802/30 = (802 ÷ 2)/(30 ÷ 2) = 401/15
The fraction can also be reduced without calculating GCF; factor the numerator and denominator and cross out all the common prime factors:
802/30 = (2 × 401)/(2 × 3 × 5) = ((2 × 401) ÷ 2)/((2 × 3 × 5) ÷ 2) = 401/15
